Dynaco Stereo 80 Power Amplifier $145

The specifications of the Stereo 80 speak for themselves. The distortion and noise, up to levels well beyond those required to drive any conventional amplifier, are comparable to the finest tube designs while the high power distortion remains inaudible. Specifications do not reveal all the facets of superior audio performance, however. In use with varying program material, the Stereo 80 achieves its design goals of sonic ease and naturalness always sought but rarely achieved in solid state designs. There is remarkable clarity and an impression of direct contact with the original without the extra brightness or stridency which, unfortunately, is sometimes attributed to high fidelity sound, but rather there is an impression of limitless range and effortless handling of the highest power peaks.

Dynaco PAT4 Pre-Amplifier

The Dynaco PAT-4 is an all silicon solid state control center and preamplifier which must be used in conjunction with a basic power amplifier and a pair of loudspeakers. In addition, the PAT-4 provides sufficient power for a pair of 600 ohm headphones. When headphones only are to be used, a power amplifier is not required.

All input signal sources, such as a phonograph, radio tuner, tape recorder, etc., are connected to the inputs of the PAT-4 and this preamplifier is the control center for all mono and stereo signals. Thoughtful planning has provided exceptional flexibility to accomodate future requirements for such sources as a second phonograph or a microphone, television sound, musical instruments requiring electronic amplification, etc. A standard phone jack input and output on the front panel enables convenient connection of a tape recorder or headphones, even when the preamplifier is installed in a cabinet.

The components in the PAT-4 are the highest quality to protect against failure, and all parts are operated conservatively with close tolerances to assure continued proper operation. The transistors have been specially selected for minimum noise and distortion in sustained use and the etched circuit modules have been pretested in the circuit to ensure that every unit, after assembly, will meet the specifications normally associated only with laboratory prototypes.

Harmon Kardon FL 8380 CD Player

Harman Kardon's stylish five-CD FL8380 CD player offers great sound, convenient features, and solid value. And while some may think twice about investing in a CD-only disc player in what is clearly the age of DVD, we have no such reservations about recommending this one. Another important factor in the quality of this machine is Harman Kardon itself, a company with a longstanding commitment to great sound. And with the FL8380, HK has halved the retail price of its predecessor, the esteemed FL8370. Operationally and sonically, this unit seems every bit as good as the FL8370, but if Harman Kardon is cutting any corners, it's hard to tell where they are. The player gives you both analog and digital outputs; depending on the amplifier or receiver you're using this with, you may want to avail yourself of both. The analog outputs afford you the extra sonic quality of CDs encoded in HDCD (High Definition Compatible Digital), while the coaxial digital-audio output facilitates hookup with an audio/video receiver or a CD recorder.

Mechanically, the FL8380 is quieter than other CD changers, a definite boon when listening in close quarters. However, the analog audio output level is also quieter, possibly due to the HDCD chip, which grants extra dynamic range to HDCD-encoded recordings but requires that non-HDCD discs be reproduced slightly lower in level. The most convenient thing about a multidisc changer, apart from being able to listen to more than six hours of uninterrupted tunes, is the ability to listen to music radio-style, where the player jumps to a fresh track from a fresh disc after every song you hear. The good news is, the FL8380 offers not one but three random-play modes. The bottom line remains, though, that this is a darn good CD player. Whether you're committed to stereo sound, maintaining a quality listening system as part your home theater, or putting together a good backroom system, the FL8380 is a great choice.
