Harman Kardon AVR 525 Dolby Digital Receiver. Like new. $489.00. Come with both remote controls, antenna, and Original box.

Dolby Digital EX, DTS-ES, and Logic 7 surround sound processing. Seven-channel, high-current, ultrawide-bandwidth amplifier. Triple Crossover bass system. Multiple digital, analog, and wide-bandwidth component video inputs. Assignable rear-channel amplifiers. Awesome high current output.

What's quite amazing is that for under $500 the AVR 525 sounds as good as a preamp  / power amp system costing many time more. The AVR 525 is a great sounding and full-featured receiver.

The latest surround technology such as Dolby Digital EX, DTS-ES, and our own Logic 7 processing, in addition to a seven-channel, high-current, ultrawide-bandwidth amplifier, the AVR 525 doesn't miss a beat. Make your program selections from a vast array of digital, analog, and wide-bandwidth component video inputs, manage the bass with our Triple Crossover system, and extend the music to a second zone with A-BUS Ready technology or assignable rear-channel amplifiers. Wherever you want your music and movies, however loud you want them, the AVR 525 can handle the job.

Features

High Instantaneous Current Capability (HCC) Amplifier(+/- 45 amps): The built-in amplifier has high-current capability to handle demanding loads. The AVR 525's powerful amplifier uses traditional Harman Kardon high-current design technologies to meet the wide dynamic range of any program selection, allowing it to effortlessly power the most dynamic digital sources.

192kHz/24-bit Digital-to-Analog Converters: The 192kHz sampling and 24-bit word length capabilities of the DACs allows you to play high-resolution recordings and hear the increased clarity, detail and dynamic range of those recordings.

Dual Zone/Dual Source Output: The AVR 525 has a sophisticated multi-zone control system that allows you to select one source for use in the main room and a different source for audio distribution to a second zone. Complete volume control in the second zone is possible by using the separately supplied "Zone 2" remote (an infrared repeater system is required to route the control signals from the second zone to the receiver). The second zone output can be preamp level or speaker level. You can use the receiver's designated stereo preamp level output for Zone 2 (the output is labeled "Multi") to send the audio to a separate amplifier or a set of powered speakers. This will allow you to use all seven channels of amplification for your main zone. If you have configured the main zone for 5.1-channel surround, you can assign the amplifiers for the left and right surround back channels to output speaker level audio to the second zone.

A-BUS Ready: The AVR 525 is one of the first receivers to offer built-in A-BUS ready operation. When used with optional A-BUS keypad or control modules, you have all the benefits of remote zone operation without the need for an external power amplifier. The A-BUS modules and keypads are connected to the receiver by a single CAT-5 (Ethernet) cable. A-BUS systems use amplified in-wall controllers to power the speakers in each room; the controllers are also capable of transmitting IR remote commands back to the receiver for full system control in any room.

Triple Crossover System: The AVR 525 allows you to set a different crossover point for the front, center and surround speakers. In systems where full-range or tower speakers are used for the front soundstage or where different brands or models are in use at the various speaker positions, this feature allows you to customize the bass management and redirection circuits with a precision not previously possible. Furthermore, you can independently set a crossover points for every input source, if desired.

Digital Bass Management: When a DVD-Audio or SACD player is connected to the 6-channel/8-channel analog input, you can apply full digital bass management to the audio signal if the source device does not have its own internal bass management system. When you select the 6-channel DVD Audio input in the source selector (or 8-channel DVD Audio when the input is connected to all eight input jacks), the signal is converted from analog to digital so that you may apply the same Triple Crossover bass management option as you do with all other outputs. Choosing this input also mutes the unused input jacks to prevent unwanted noise from interfering with system performance. If the source device has its own internal bass management system, you can select the 6-channel (or 8-channel) Direct Input in the source selector, and the audio signal will pass through directly to the volume control without any further processing.

HDCD Decoding: The AVR 525 automatically detects and decodes the digital bitstream from a CD that has been encoded through the special High Definition Compatible Digital (HDCD) process. HDCD discs use 20-bit encoding and other proprietary processing to provide the ultimate in CD listening. HDCD is only available in the Sterreo (Surround Off) mode.

MP3 Audio Playback: By offering MP3 decoding, the AVR 525 is able to deliver precise conversion of the digital signals to an analog output in addition to the obvious the benefits of listening to the MP3 audio through the AVR 525's high-current amplifier and the speakers from your surround system, rather than the smaller speakers and low-powered amplifiers typically used with computers. For computers that do not have an optical or coaxial digital output, you can use the Harmon Kardon DAL 150 digital audio transcoder to convert digital signals from a USB output to a coaxial digital output. When an MP3 digital bitstream is received, playback automatically reverts to 2-channel stereo.

EzSet Remote: Harman Kardon's exclusive EzSet remote makes it possible to quickly and accurately set the AVR 525's output levels without the use of a sound pressure meter, although manual adjustment is also available. Using the sensor microphone at the top of the remote, EzSet will adjust the output level of each channel so that when the process is complete all levels will be equal and at the set reference point.

Dolby Pro Logic II: Pro Logic II is a Dolby Laboratories technology that produces surround sound from any stereo source, including CDs, VHS tapes, and TV programs. Like Dolby Digital, Dolby Pro Logic II has stereo surround output, giving you a more realistic surround sound experience. Unlike Dolby Digital, Dolby Pro Logic II allows you to enjoy a "5.1-like" presentation using any analog stereo source. Pro Logic II includes a Movie mode, Music mode, and Emulation Mode (recreates the standard four-channel Pro Logic decoding mode).

Logic 7 Decoding: An exclusive Harman Kardon surround process, Logic 7 is implemented as three separate modes: Logic 7 M for Music, Logic 7 C for Cinema and Logic 7 E for Enhance. Logic 7 M, designed to be used with analog or PCM stereo sources, enhances the listening experience by presenting a wider front soundstage and greater rear ambience. Logic 7 C, designed to be used with any source that contains Dolby Surround or similar matrix encoding, delivers increased center-channel intelligibility and more accurate placement of sounds with fades and pans that are much smoother and more realistic than with other decoding techniques. Logic 7 E, available only when the 5.1 option is chosen, adds additional bass enhancement that circulates low frequencies (40-120Hz) to the front and surround speakers to deliver a less localized soundstage that appears broader and wider than when the subwoofer is the sole source of bass energy.

VMAx: Another H-K exclusive, the VMAx mode delivers a three-dimensional sound space with the illusion of "phantom speakers" at the center and surround positions when only the two front-channel loudspeakers are used. VMAx N, or "Near Field" mode should be selected when your listening position is less than five feet from the speakers. VMAx F, or "Far Field" mode should be selected when your listening position is greater than five feet from the speakers.

Surround Modes:

Dolby Digital
Dolby Digital EX
DTS 5.1
DTS-ES 6.1 (Matrix and Discrete Modes)
Dolby Pro Logic II (Movie, Music and Emulation Modes)
Logic 7 (Cinema, Music and Enhance Modes)
DTS Neo6 (Cinema and Music)
Theater
Hall 1 and 2
VMAx (Near and Far)
Night Mode Setting: The Night mode is a feature of Dolby Digital that uses special processing to preserve the dynamic range and full intelligibility of a movie sound track while reducing the peak level. This prevents abruptly loud transitions from disturbing others, without reducing the sonic impact of a digital source. Note that the Night mode is only available when specially encoded Dolby Digital signals are played.

System Configuration Memory: The AVR 525 features an advanced memory system that enables you to establish different configurations for the speaker configuration, digital input, surround mode, delay times, crossover frequency and output levels for each input source. This flexibility enables you to custom-tailor the way in which you listen to each source and have the AVR 525 memorize those settings. Once these settings are made, they will automatically be recalled whenever you select that input.

Turn-On Volume Level: As is the case with most audio/video receivers, when the AVR 525 is turned on, it will always return to the volume setting in effect when the unit was turned off. However, you may prefer to always have the AVR 525 turn on at a specific setting, regardless of what was last in use when the unit was turned off. This feature allows you to change the default condition so that the same volume level is always used at turn-on.

Display Dimmer: The display brightness may be set to full intensity, half intensity or off.

Memory Backup: This unit is equipped with a memory backup system that preserves the system configuration information and tuner presets if the unit is accidentally unplugged or subjected to a power outage. This memory will last for approximately two weeks, after which time all information must be reentered.

On-Screen Display (OSD): The AVR 525 receiver offers a full-screen and partial-screen display. The Full-OSD menu system is helpful with setup and adjustment of the receiver through a series of menu pages. The Semi-OSD places one-line messages at the lower third of the video display screen whenever the volume, input source, surround mode or tuner frequency is changed. In both cases, the display will remain on the screen for a set number of seconds before they disappear or "Time Out". You can adjust the "Time Out" period if you prefer a slightly longer or shorter period of time for the display to appear.

Remote Control

AVR 525 EzSet Learning/Multibrand A/V Remote: The AVR 525 comes with a powerful, fully illuminated remote control that will control not only the receiver's functions, but also most popular brands of audio and video equipment, including CD players, cassette decks, TV sets, cable boxes, VCRs, satellite receivers and other home-theater equipment. The AVR 525 remote is also capable of learning codes from remotes not in the remote's internal code library. Using the sensor microphone at the top of the remote, the EzSet feature, discussed above in the "Features" section, allows you to quickly and accurately set the AVR 525's output levels without the use of a sound pressure meter.

Zone 2 Remote: In addition to the main remote, the AVR 525 also comes with a separate infrared remote for the second zone. It may be used in the same room where the receiver is located, or it may be used in a separate room with an optional infrared sensor connected to the receiver's Multi IR input. When in the same room as the receiver, it can control the functions of the receiver or any compatible Harmon Kardon products in that room. When in the separate room, the buttons for Power, Input Source, Volume and Mute will control the source and volume for the second zone as connected to the multi-room audio outputs.

Macros: Five macros, consisting of as many as 19 button operations each, can be programmed into this remote: one that is associated with the Power On Button, and four more that are accessed by pressing the Macro buttons. With the press of a single button, each macro will perform a series of up to 19 button operations in sequence.

IR Inputs/Output: If the receiver's front panel IR sensor is blocked due to cabinet doors or other obstructions, an external IR sensor may be connected to the Remote IR input on the receiver's rear panel. The receiver's remote IR sensor can also operate other remote-controlled Harman-Kardon equipment when the source component is connected to the receiver's IR output jack. When using the receiver's multi-room output, you can connect the output of an IR sensor in the second zone to the receiver's' Multi IR input. This allows you to use the Zone 2 remote from the second zone to control the receiver.

Inputs and Outputs Notes

A-BUS Port: The AVR 525 has an RJ-45 jack for use with an A-BUS system. With a single CAT-5 (Ethernet) cable, A-BUS modules can be connected so that the remote zone speakers may be powered directly from the module or keypad without the need for additional power, IR sensor or volume control wires to be run to the second zone.

Speaker Outputs: The speaker outputs have binding post connectors. You can use speaker wire with pin connectors or banana plugs or connect bare speaker wire to each output. They are not 5-way binding posts because a collar surrounding the output prevents the use of spade connectors, and they are spaced too far apart for dual banana plugs.

Surround Back Speaker Outputs: These speaker terminals are normally used to power the Surround Back left and Surround Back right speakers in a 7.1 channel system. They may also be used to power speakers in the second zone, which will receive the output selected for a multi-room system.

6/8 Channel Direct Inputs: This unit has 8 RCA jacks for use for connection to source devices such as DVD-Audio and SACD players or with external 5.1 or 7.1 channel decoders with discrete analog outputs. Depending on the source device in use, all eight jacks may be used, though in many cases only connections to the front left/right, center, surround left/right and subwoofer will be used for standard 5.1 audio signals. As described in the Features section above, the AVR 525 has the capability of applying digital bass management to the multi-channel analog input signal.

RS-232 Port: The RS-232 port on the rear panel is used to enable the AVR 525 to be controlled by an external computer or programmable remote system that uses RS-232 commands. Due to the complexity of RS-232 connections, it is recommended that they be made only by trained installers familiar with their use.
